Review: Ore-Ida Golden Crinkles French Fried Potatoes

Unlike their boxed counterparts here, that strive for an ultra crisp finish, these fries have no mad science at work. These are simple crinkle cut fries that can be cooked up in a number of ways.

I ditched my home deep fryer years ago, because, well, I can’t stand the mess they create, and I save those particular calories for restaurants. That said, oven cooking is what I had in mind here from the outset. Being a Brit, I love a thick cut, soft and dense “chip”. If you’ve been to an English “chippy”, you’ll know what I mean.

Anyway, at least from a baked perspective, these fries nail what I wanted. They’re thick cut and cook to a soft slight al dente finish. Perfect for slapping on a sandwich (chip butty, another brit thing, look it up) or pouring over with a gravy or other range of toppings. Sometimes I get an inch for a pile of soft, salt potatoes and these scratch that craving perfectly.

Ore-Ida Golden Crinkles French Fried Potatoes – what’s in the bag?

This product comes in various sizes, the one reviewed here is the 32 ouches bag. One minor complaint is the main packaging is not resealable, once opened you will probably want to transfer to a freezer safe gallon back to prevent freezer burn.

As I mentioned above, sometimes I just load these up on thick white bread, add a little more salt (I know I know) and then dig in. It’s perfect comfort food, a carbohydrate and salt overload.

Slightly less unhealthy, how about these Mexican-styled loaded fries? Here I’ve topped the Ore-Ida fries with MorningStar Farms grillers crumblers, fresh home made pico de gallo, diced avocado, pepitas, chipotle ranch and a home roasted fresh jalapeño for good measure!

Another fun way to serve these is with a gravy rich sauce. What can I say, I’ a sucker for the mushy potato texture and I love adding a sauce to them to help them along in that manner. Below I’ve used a Japanese beef curry using Kokomaru curry cubes with peas, carrots and onions:

And here I am channeling my inner Brit, carb on carb, “chip butty”:

How much are Ore-Ida Golden Crinkles French Fried Potatoes

As of May 2019 I paid $2.96 for the 32 ounce package from Walmart. The 32oz package is easily enough for four very hearty servings (the package claims 11!) which I feel is a very fair price.

Are Ore-Ida Golden Crinkles French Fried Potatoes any good?

Yes! If you’re looking for a quick French fry potato fix, these are a very simple solution. If you choose to bake them, the results will be a denser, mushier fry – but hey – sometimes that’s exactly what you’re craving right?

  1. Purchased Ore-ida golden waffle fries. Hardly any waffle fries in the bag. It is a mix of cut french fries mostly. Disappointed.
