I’m always surprised by how many gems I find on Walmart’s Great Value label. For a budget grocer, and arguably their wallet friendly product line – they often shoot well above the product line’s promise. Here, fifty “chicken” nuggets come in a non resealable freezer sack. Transfer them to a better container on opening.
I say “chicken” as we need to be honest, these things are usually mechanically separated creations of the modern industrial world, resembling little the animal that they started out as. Indeed these nuggets even include Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) as well as much much more in their ingredient list. If you’re looking for something more than a fast-food style nugget, stop reading now.
Cooking: Air fry or bake, but don’t look to the microwave. Ordinarily that might turn me off, but the results are worth it. I’ve only air fried these, but the results are fantastic.
Taste and texture: Spot on. When you’re craving a nugget to simply dip and dunk, you rarely want a piece of gourmet oultry. You want this. The nuggets are terrifically juicy and have something of an X factor that I swore might be MSG, but I couldn’t find that listed amongst the ingredients. It’s a terrifically moreish flavor
The texture internally never runs into over spongey or rubbery territory and the exterior breading is thin with a suitable crisp crunch.
Verdict: In the context of industrial-reformed nuggets, these are fantastic examples. Just don’t go in expecting real this, or organic that. This is the epitome of the nugget in my book.
