Are Field Roast Frankfurters any good?

These are a decent meat free hot dog. They didn’t set my world alight personally, they were a little too big and too powerful flavor wise. These are meaty dogs that would do well on the grill though.

Another variety of sausage from the meat free experts at Field Roast – one of my favorite vegan brands. Unlike other Field Roast sausages that come four to a pack, these intriguing come 6 to a back, an otherwise anomaly in the larger product range. I assume that’s so you have six sausage to match your six hot dog buns. Or I could be reading way too much into things…

Being Frankfurters these are big, hearty dogs, significantly bigger than most hot dog buns it should be noted. You’ll want to shop for buns accordingly. It’s not just the size that’s big either, the flavoring of these dogs is big, bold and assertive. In my taste tests, no matter how I prepared them, their flavor was the prominent component of the final meal. You might find this a plus or negative, for me I prefer a slightly smaller dog, with less pronounced flavor.

For these reasons, they aren’t my personal favorite meat free dog. They might be for you of course, they’re still a solid product, and of course like other Field Roast products are made from natural ingredients and 100% vegan friendly.

Field Roast Frankfurters cooking instructions and nutrition

Compared to meat based Frankfurters these are practically a salad. Sure there’s salt and fat, but nowhere near the levels you’d find normally. They pack in a massive 21g of protein too – no doubt why just one Frankfurter feels so satiating.

The package lists pan frying or boiling in their casing as cooking options. I tried both, both yielded similar results and take roughly similar amounts of time. Given how sturdy these Frankfurters are, I wouldn’t be against throwing them on the grill to finish off with a little smoky char.

To accommodate these monster dogs, I went with my local grocery store’s bakery rolls. Typical measly hot dog buns won’t cut it here. As the flavor of these dogs is so prominent you’ll want to consider equally aggressive toppings. In the pictures below you can see two creations, a fairly typical array setup with jalapeños and after that my take on Currywurst; a Hoyt dog bathed in rich Japanese curry (I used House Foods Vermont Curry).

For a different spin, these sausages robust texture make them perfect for stir fried dishes. In the picture below I’ve used a sliced up frankfurter in a simple egg fried rice – with more of that delicious curry sauce – yes I am obsessed:
