Review: Mae Ploy Green Curry Paste

This has to be one of my favorite products on a regular grocery store shelf. I’ve no doubt your favorite Thai restaurant can make a fresher, better paste blend in house. I’ve no doubt if you round up some fresh lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, shrimp paste etc yourself – you can do it yourself – with an afternoon of experimenting and mess of course.

For the rest of us, who just want to make something fresh, healthy and quick – I reach for Mae Ploy over and over throughout the year. It’s a really solid curry paste you can use in a ton of Thai dishes; with a little creativity you can use it to lend South East Asian punch to everything from burgers to roast dinners (yes I’ve done both!)

Inside the white plastic tub you’ll find a sealed plastic bag packed with green curry paste. Unopened the container is shelf staple, once you cut open the inner bad you will need to refrigerate to keep it long term. And wow, what a shelf life it has then – look at that lid. In my experience, whenever I grab a new container it has at least 1-2 years of usability!

Speaking of opening the bag, I like to carefully snip one of the top corners diagonally. That means when I need some paste for a recipe, I can squeeze the plastic bag almost like how you pipe cake icing out of a bag; I can pipe it right out into a table spoon measuring spoon. This makes it really easy and mess free.

O.k. yes, it’s a salt bomb, but no doubt that’s why it has such a great shelf life. Apart from that, there’s nothing crazy to report here.

What can you make with Mae Ploy Green Curry Paste?

Chance are you’re probably making a Thai green curry if you’re racing for green curry paste. This is one of the most popular uses for the pre-made paste. Here’s one I made using Hodu tofu puffs:

What’s a fair price for Mae Ploy Green Curry Paste?

My local grocery store has these 14 ounce tubs for $3.99. Given the extensive shelf life once refrigerated I call that a bargain. Unless you’re a heat crazed maniac – you’ll get dozens of meals out of one container.

You can also buy Mae Ploy green curry paste on Amazon (affiliate link, we get a small fee) in huge 35 ounce tubs for less than $10. The product also ships free on Prime too!

Is Mae Ploy Green Curry Paste any good?
4.3

Summary

Yes! In my experience you’re only going to get materially better results grinding and blending your own curry paste by hand. That however is a tedious and time consuming task. This Mae Ploy product lasts for months upon months in the fridge and is a very capable product to have on standby. Buy Mae Ploy green curry paste on Amazon
