Could this – be the way of the future? We’re not sure, but if you live in Fayetteville, Arkansas you can head on down to this intriguing new Walmart prototype – a store built entirely around self checkout.
We are immediately reminded of some of Amazon’s experimental ’employee-less’ stores in the North West that relied on scanners and sensors to auto-bill shoppers as they moved around the store picking up items.
Both seem like exciting new concepts to us – especially in this brave new world of social distancing. Walmart seems particular attended to consumers changing preferences in stores; March saw the company launch a zero touch payment servicing using the Walmart Pay app. This system allows shoppers to scan a QR code at checkout, removing the need to touch the checkout screen.

Hi, I’m Stuart, nice to meet you! I’m the founder, writer and wrangler at Gastronomic SLC – Utah’s biggest and oldest online food magazine; I’m also a former restaurant critic of more than five years, working for the Salt Lake Tribune. I’ve worked extensively with multiple local publications from Visit Salt Lake to Salt Lake Magazine, not least helped to consult on national TV shows.
I’m a multiple-award winning journalist and have covered the Utah dining scene for the better part of fifteen years. I’m largely fueled by a critical obsession with rice, alliteration and the use of big words I don’t understand. I started Shop Smart to catalogue my adventures in the grocery store and kitchen.
